Arles has been classified as a “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” (City of Art and History). Most monuments and buildings are protected and situated in the historical centre of the town.
Arles has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and it is the city with the largest number of Roman monuments after Rome.
People think of Arles for the wealth of its ancient and Roman heritage. Its buildings and monuments were listed UNESCO world heritage sites in 1981. These include the Roman amphitheatre (the arena), the ancient theatre, the Cryptoporticus, Constantine's Roman baths, the remains of the Roman circus, St Trophime Monastery, St Trophime gate and the Alyscamps, which mark the point of departure of the Arles Route, one of the three routes leading to Santiago de Compostela.
